Austrian Elite Liga kicks Off
Last weekend the new Austrian "Elite Liga" started with Celtic A having their first encounter against Bezigrad (from Slovenia) and the Wanderers playing the Stade All stars. The new League consists of 5 teams: Donau, Stade, Celtic, Innsbruck and Bezigrad. Graz and Linz moved down to the "National Liga" consisting of 8 teams with the newcomer Maribor from Slovenia.
The game against Bezigrad kicked off at 15:00, it was a very hot day for the time of year and the ground was rock solid. Celtic had some difficulties finding into the game as Bezigrad was playing a very physical game, having very big Forwards and some big backs. But celtic managed to hold them off very well in the forwards, winning most the scrums and line outs due to better discipline and skills. Celtic managed to get the advantage over Bezigrad due to the lack of speed of Bezigrad's players and managed to score 2 Tries in the Backs from Vicentiu Vacaru and Martin Barrett. Vacaru's trie was a show of magnificent sidestepping and speed after a dummy pass ending in a solo try. Barrett's try was a production from some good play by the forwards and backs. Further Vacaru converted 1 try and slotted 2 penalties. Bezigrad scored 1 try, 1 conversion and 2 penalties. Over all it was a hard game with some dangerous situations, but celtic remained on top through out most of the game, staying mostly in Bezigrads half of the pitch. The finale score was 18:13 for Celtic The Wanderers game kicked off before the A team game this time and it was a very young and experienced team, consisting mostly of beginners, with a few having their first ever game and some old boys. They showed excellent spirit and showed that they learned a lot in such a short time. Sadly the final score was 67:10 with Stade having a much more experienced team. Nevertheless it was a very good day of rugby. Many thanks to the many supporters that showed up for this game and cheered the team on! We hope to see as many and more at the next game!!!
