Tournament report

Last Saturday Vienna Celtic took part in the third round of the Austrian 7's league. Despite having a limited amount of willing and available players, Celtic took on the challenge of taking on some of Austria's best sevens teams.

The competition was hosted in Wiener-Neustadt and very well organized by the home team RC Wombats, even having two pitches for the games, which is a luxury in Austria, enabling the tournament to run smoothly and quickly.

Nine teams from all over Austria took part in the tournament causing it to be a very competitive tournament for all teams. The amount of spectators also proved the growing interest of rugby in Austria with the newest team in Austria RSV 100 showing up with enough players to make up more than two teams.

Vienna Celtic entered the competition with not very high expectations, after having been defeated in the last tournament in Linz. The surprise arrival of Ted Wilcox (VCRFC First XV captain) and Iain Ford (VCRFC Veteran) and siblings boosted the confidence of the other players, bringing the over all player count up to ten and the fan count to two. Led by Captain Bernhard Fürnkranz the team was able to win all of the group matches and advance to the final stages of the competition, leaving them to face only Donau and Linz. A tough and very close match against RC Donau proved victorious for VCRFC winning by 15-14. Leaving only Linz who had previously been beaten By RC Donau, the Vienna team recuperated for the last time to overcome Linz and retrieve the well deserved first place in the tournament, Bringing VCRFC overall standing in the Austrain 7's league to 4th.

The squad consisted of the following players: Mushegh Aslanyan, Zoltan Bartok, Marcus Breier , Iain Ford, Bernhard Fürnkranz, Kyrill Lapin, Patrick Meister, Yeong-U Seo, Ted Willcox, Lee Zeinzinger

Tries for Celtic where scored by all with Marcus Breier scoring on his debut for celtic. The player of the tournament award went out to Lee Zeinzinger(VCRFC). The end results for the tournament can be seen below:
